Choosing a canoe paddle can seem difficult but with the correct information it is actually quite simple. Canoe paddles have a shaft with a single blade at one end at a T-grip at the end. The T-grip enables the paddler to use their outside hand to hold the top of the paddle while the inside hand grips the shaft.
Just like a kayak paddle, the main decision is size. Most people will be happy with a 56 to 58 inch paddle length. If your canoe sits exceptionally low or high in the water however, you may want to get a different length paddle to adjust accordingly.
The shape and size of the blade is important. A wide short blade will enable powerful strokes but can be tiring on the paddler. A long narrow blade will move through the water much easier but will not generate as much forward thrust.
Materials of canoe paddles can differ. They vary from wood, to aluminum to plastic. In general, material affects durability weight and price. Many people underestimate the importance of buying a more expensive but lighter paddle. This can pay off in the long run however because it makes each stroke less tiring.
